Put a little bit of effort towards improving your situation every day

Friday, 18 May 2007

The world, as I'm sure you've already noticed, can sometimes be a very tough place. Achieving things you thought would be easy can turn out to be ridiculously difficult. Problems you never foresaw can appear suddenly and take over your life.

What's a person to do in the face of such adversity?

It's little wonder that a lot of people simply throw their arms up in despair. Sometimes it can all seem like too much work. It can appear too difficult.

But there's a solution to the overwhelming problems the world throws at you. That's to use your most important resource of time against them. Assuming you sleep for eight hours a day, that leaves you five-thousand eight-hundred and forty hours a year to chip away at the challenges you face. That's one heck of a tool to use.

Most people want easy solutions to the big problems that face them. When such solutions fail to appear, they give up. But winners take a different approach. They see that big problems take time to overcome. And they put a little bit of effort towards improving their situation every day.

Let's say, for example, that you hate your job. You feel it fails to challenge your intellect as much as you deserve. Simply by signing up for a career enhancing course you can improve your situation. Sure, it might take a few years, but that time will fly by and you'll soon find yourself with an important new tool in your fight against reality.

Say you're in a lot of debt. Simply saving a bit more money each week can be a good solution for this problem. Each amount on its own probably won't make much difference to your situation. But the habit of saving over a few years can make a massive difference to your finances.

Even putting in the effort to read some kind of knowledge-improving book for half an hour a day will make a big difference. Do this for a few years and you'll soon find yourself one of the most knowledgeable people you know. The simple ideas and beliefs of your peers will start to seem beneath you.

Put a little bit of effort towards improving your situation each day. Rather than looking for easy solutions, invest the time it really takes to overcome your problems. Lots of little steps forwards can take you a long way. You just have to be patient enough to see the journey through.

What is the difference between you and a person struggling to scratch out a living from nature 50,000 years ago? Biologically, nothing. You are essentially identical. You just got lucky in the draw of history and were born into the modern world. But how this modern world was built must be the greatest story ever told. There we were a few thousand generations back, dropped naked in the dust. And he we are now, flying into space, building the internet and destroying deadly microbes.

Self help & motivationIs it better to read fiction or non-fiction?
One of the most popular articles I’ve written on this site so far has been Five excellent mind habits to develop. It’s been generally well received, but I have come in for some criticism for my belief that it’s a better mind habit to read non-fiction than fiction.
